Introduction
Neil Brosnan is a master of the short story.
There is a rhythm and a flow to his pieces that knits together the different seams and stitching as if by invisible mending.
Neil is an accomplished songwriter and this background in music shows itself in the cadence of his work.
Each story is a separate working but Neil’s love of place and empathy with his fellow human beings are constant. The stories are essentially based on relationships and all the turbulence, love, trauma, drama and topsy-turviness that is bound up in how we interact with each.
But this is done in an understated way. Brosnan’s tales are related without fanfare. The writing is open, honest and without too many big words. He has resisted showing off and the apparent simplicity of the telling masks the layers of meaning that stay with you afterwards. It is the aftertaste that makes his short stories truly memorable.
Many of Neil’s tales have been published individually in different journals over the years. Some have won awards. Neil is a Listowel Writer’s Week winner and now, after much persuasion, the songwriter has given us his greatest hits.
This is a beside the bed book. Take it up and it will put you to sleep! I mean this in the best possible way. The book is easy reading. Neil Brosnan takes us away from the here and now and we forget the daily grind yet, paradoxically, his stories are very much rooted in the not so simple world we live in.
Each story is a treat in itself. The collection – a treasure.

Brosnan’s craft is fresh and original. He captures a glimpse of the lives of his characters and knows where and how to end his stories, often with an unpredictability that leaves the reader satisfied to have invested time in reading and wishing to re-read again and again. This collection will find its readership both in Ireland and further afield.

These stories have a variety of context, the ability to jump from generation to generation, class to class, rural to urban and surprisingly, gender to gender, with equal self-assurance. As a short story writer, Neil Brosnan has that very necessary talent to bring the reader immediately into the atmosphere of the telling.
