Introduction
Welcome to our collection of lesson plans on diversity. These lessons are suitable for younger children and can be adapted for all classes from Junior Infants to Second.
As primary teachers, we are very aware of the pressure to produce specialised and specifically researched lessons in all subject areas of the curriculum. All topics covered in this book are done so with an average of five sessions in mind. Teachers can teach in a linear, progressive way from one session to the next and from one lesson to the next. Alternatively, teachers can pick and choose, in any one area, from a wide variety of stories, worksheets and activities.
In addressing diversity, we have included lessons on the six major world religions. However, diversity, religious or otherwise, cannot be taught separately to social justice and human rights education, nor can it be taught separately to a proper examination of our own feelings and motivations, which govern the way we think and act.
Likewise, given the fact that the environment presents the most pressing and most vital challenge to the population of the planet right now, environmental issues must form an intrinsic part of diversity learning and we have included units of work in a number of related areas.
For some time, we have felt that there was a growing need to address diversity in a structured, substantive manner. In doing so, we were keen to produce an expansive selection of work in a wide range of themes and topics. We are aware, however, that this is a complex area of study and our collection of lesson plans necessarily covers a relatively small portion of that spectrum.
All lessons can be applied to the English curriculum as well as either S.E.S.E. or S.P.H.E. Drama, visual arts, music and dance are integrated throughout.
We hope you will find them useful.
