Matt Mooney’s second collection of poetry ‘Falling Apples’ will delight and inspire. On a wide canvas he depicts a panorama of experiences, scenes, nature and events. The collection takes us on a whirlwind journey from his native Galway, to Thailand, to New Zealand, to his home in Listowel and many places in between.
The poems have an immediacy and tenderness in the observation of nature.
About the Author
Matt Mooney was born in South Galway. He is a graduate of UCG and of UCC and he has worked as a teacher and a guidance counsellor in Listowel in North Kerry. Married to Mary, they have three daughters Anne, Méabh and Siobhán.
It was in UCG in the early sixties, in a climate where poetry was thriving, that he began to paddle in poetic waters. Later in Listowel he was led to Mount Olympus by poets like Gabriel Fitzmaurice and Michael Hartnett.
His first collection Droving was launched at Writers’ Week 2003. He has read poems on radio, at Baffle in Loughrea and at the West Cork Literary Festival. He has been published in The Connaught Tribune, West 47 and in Feasta.
Falling Apples (2010) is the title of his second collection. Its variety of themes and interpretations of natural phenomena will interest a wide range of readers. The belief of the poet is that reality is awesome and that gold dust can be found where you would least expect it.
“A meaningful and challenging collection”

Lake Te Anau
Stopping at Lake Te Anau
Felt like we had stumbled
On some masterpiece of art
Then made a part of it;
To be of no other tableau-
So perfect and untamed.
Breathless at the stillness
Of lake water pastel blue:
Nature’s ancient mirror
For the clearest of a sky
And Keplar snowy crested-
True reflections in Te Anau.
