This is a collection of Mary Frances Mooney’s poems and short stories written over a number of years. She started writing short stories which were published by The Imeldist and Madonna and then graduated on to adult work, articles, and poems.
Mary went to London, thinking to return after few months, but the months grew into years as she attended evening classes at the City Literary Institute. Their literary discussion classes fulfilled the lacunae in her English studies (she had concentrated more on Irish) and she continued with her French. Later in life she joined a Poetry Writing group and the tutor gave her every encouragement to continue.
Most of the work in this collection was written in London but since Mary retirement to Dublin she has continued to write. Mary has a huge number of translations from French 19th century poets and she has also written for children.
Mary hopes this book will give you some of the pleasure she felt in writing and some of the laughter : “Laugh and the world laughs with you.”
Man said: Go away, God,
We don’t need you,
The Godhead withdrew
Pulled down his Blind,
Leaving one little chink.
God is kind.
